October is the perfect time to read The Orange Shoes!  Not only is it about pumpkins and fall festivals and Back-to-School Night, but it is also about anti-bullying.  October is National Anti-Bullying Month!

One school in upstate New York chose The Orange Shoes as their One School-One Book for the month of October.  This means that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, in the whole school read The Orange Shoes.  That included not only every teacher and student from kindergarten through 5th grade, but the principal, the assistant principal, office staff, custodians, bus drivers, crossing guards and even the cafeteria ladies too!

That October, I was their visiting author.  As I drove into school that morning and parked, the crossing guard came running over to my car.  “Are you the author?” she shouted, before I could roll down my window.  “Oh, no,” I thought, “I must have parked in the wrong spot.” Then she smiled and said, “I loved your book about the orange shoes!”

Then, when I was about to give my presentation in the multi-purpose room to students, all the lunch ladies came out of the kitchen, settled themselves comfortably in chairs, and listened intently to my entire presentation!

The story of The Orange Shoes resonated with everyone in that school, even the lunch ladies.  It was one of the best schools I’ve ever visited!
