Book Description:

Fourth-grader Jillian LOVES math! It’s her favorite subject and she is good at it too.

But it’s the early 1970’s in America. When Jillian goes to sign her name on the Math Club sign-up sheet, she is met with snickering and jeers. A girl in the boys’ club? Maybe she doesn’t belong.

But change is in the air. The women’s movement and the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment is in full swing. When Jillian learns about the discrimination experienced by her mother, and Miss Purdy, her older neighbor’s fight for the right to vote in 1920, Jillian realized what is needed is for just one girl to step forward.

The appealing artwork captures the period (early 1970s) as well as the characters emotions.  A worthwhile addition to the Tales of Young Americans series, Noble’s picture book offers a simply written, honest portrayal of the harmful effects of prejudice and the healing powers of knowledge and support from others.   Booklist – June 2024

“A young girl growing up in the 1970s takes a stand against sexism, with support from the women in her life. The history Just One Girl retells is important, and many youngsters will feel heartened by Jillian’s mother’s words: “Maybe all it will take is just one girl to be the first.” This book offers a blend of history and earnest, heartfelt encouragement.” – Kirkus Review – September 2024
